Actually it's just a ficus tree(albeit a beautiful one!). There are lots of them that big in south Florida. They grow rather quickly and much of the trunk is made up of tufts of roots that grow downward then fuse together to form support columns. We had two about 2/3 this size in our front yard when we lived there. Our house there was built in the 1940's so if this garden was built turn of the century they probably planted it then. :)

Gosh, you know, I think this has to be the OLDEST damn tree I've ever seen! O.o The only places we have trees this old in the US are in the Redwood forests of California and a few places here and there in the deep south, mainly in Louisiana.
